2015: Agreement Or Not, Nigerians’ll Decide Jonathan’s Fate – Gov Aliyu

Niger State Governor: Babangida Aliyu
Niger State Governor: Dr. Babangida Aliyu

Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has described the seven governors in the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led People’s Democratic Party, PDP, as reformers and not rebels.

Gov. Aliyu also declared that he would remain undaunted in the course of championing reformation within the ruling party with the aim of rescuing it from those he described as undemocratic elements.

He made this known when members of the executive committee of the party in the North Central zone, led by its Chairman, Yusuf Ayetogu paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Minna, the state capital on Wednesday.

His words: “What we are saying is that there is room for reform. The principle of democracy is that you cannot have it good at the top while the bottom is rotten.

“The fact that we have been in government for the past 14 years does not mean that we must be there perpetually. We are there because people have trust and confidence and believe that the party can help Nigerians to live peacefully but in a situation where autocracy is the order of the day… then some people must intervene and this is what some of us are doing.”

On the purported one term agreement President Goodluck Jonathan signed with some PDP governors prior to the 2011 general elections, the governor, who also doubles as chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum, said the issue should be left for Nigerians to decide at the appropriate time, as according to him, the future is in the hands of God.

He said: “Whether you agree that there is a promise or no promise; agreement or no agreement, it is okay. That is left for the people to decide.”

On the agitation for power to return to the North in 2015, he added, “nobody can remove the President today unless God says so because he did not bring himself to power. The future is in the hands of God.’’

In his response, the Zonal Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ayetogu said his team was in the state to persuade Mr. Aliyu to embrace peace and return to the mainstream PDP so as to move it towards the path of unity.
