The third seed Scot failed to live up to his billing, losing 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, in two hours and 15 minutes on a hot afternoon to a fired up Wawrinka.

Wawrinka also beat the 26-year-old in the first week of the 2010 US Open- Murray’s last early ouster of a Grand Slam- and even with fellow Scot Sir Sean Connery in the stands, the Swiss succeeded with another painful victory over the defending champion.

Murray admitted that the comedown from an incredible Wimbledon had some effect as he has struggled to find his peak since winning at the All England Club.

“When you work hard for something for a lot of years it’s going to take a bit of time to really fire yourself up and get yourself training 110%,” Murray said after his loss.

“That’s something that I think is kind of natural after what happened at Wimbledon. But I have been here nearly three weeks now, I practiced a lot, so I gave myself a chance to do well because I prepared properly.”

Wawrinka sets up top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-final after the Serb saw off 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the night.
