NABBED: Eight Fake NYSC Members Sent To Prison

Published

on

Eight fake members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC have been arrested, charged to court and remanded in prison.

The accused are Agatha Azuma, Amarachukwu Okoro, Nicholas Eze, Blessing Samuel, Wisdom Nwoke, Paulyn Worgu, Cordelia Ugwuata and Blessing Duru.

Chief Magistrate Ramatu Gulma of the Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court on Thursday also directed the Defence Counsel, Mrs Ijeoma Utchay, to apply formally for the bail of the accused, and adjourned the case till 25 November for hearing.

Ramatu Gulma also ordered for a one-week hearing on the case, starting from 25 November, to ease the transportation of the accused as they do not reside within the FCT.

The Prosecutor, Mr Moses Idakwo, of the State Security Service (SSS), objected to the bail application and stated that the first accused, Azuma, had, on 21 January, presented herself to Patrick Orem, a mobilisation officer at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maitama, for mobilisation.

Idakwo said Azuma claimed to be a graduate of Manonmamian Sundaranar University, India, while the second accused, Okoro, had super-imposed an Indian visa bearing her name on an old Nigerian international passport, which had a United Kingdom visa belonging to Dada Ajoke.

Idakwo said Okoro also had, as part of her credentials, a fake degree certificate and transcript from the said university and a fake National Examination Council (NECO) result.

The prosecutor said the officer raised doubts on the credentials and reported to the SSS for investigations and during the investigation it was discovered Azuma paid N70,000, which was part payment of an agreed N150,000 to the third accused, Eze, for the said credentials.

Idakwo said that Eze and  Ikechukwu Izuchukwu, who is currently at large, conspired to prepare the documents.

Investigations revealed that Eze had provided about 30 persons, most of them now at large, with  same credentials for NYSC mobilisation, where the suspects paid between N50,000 and N120,000 to the accused for the said papers.

Idakwo said the remaining accused were arrested with similar fake documents.

He said that Eze, who served in Kaduna State in 2007, also presented fake certificate of the said university.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97, 364, 368, 322, 132,133 and 325 of the Penal Code.

The Cable News Network, CNN seems not done with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government with the television channel releasing another report on the shooting at the Lekki toll gate during the End SARS protests.

Recall that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, called out CNN over its report on the incident.

He added that CNN was biased in its report and needs to be sanctioned.

The Minister also addressed a letter to the management of CNN in Atlanta.

The network, however, on Tuesday released the second report with more damning footage showing soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.

The second report also shows the Commander, 81 Division, Brig.Gen Ahmed Taiwo, admitting before the judicial panel in Lagos that military men had live ammunition in their weapons while at the tollgate.

CNN also noted that the statement of Brig.Gen Taiwo contradicts that of the Minister who had claimed last week that the army fired blank bullets.

It was also revealed in the new report, the moment when protesters were running as soldiers open fire at the tollgate.
