Boko Haram: CAN Flays Arrest Of Five Members In Borno, Petitions Gov. Shettima

boko-haramThe Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gwoza area council of Borno State has petitioned Governor Kashim Shettima over what it described as arrest and illegal detention of five of its members by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order (ORO) over their alleged affiliation to Boko Haram.

The petition which was dated August 9, 2013, and signed by coordinating secretary of the CAN, Rev. Joel Ndirmbita, called for thorough probe of the matter.

The petition noted that five CAN members were arrested on July 30, by some youths who are members of the civilian JTF on the allegation that they belong to the deadly Islamist sect.

“All the five detained people listed in our petition, your Excellency, are Christians, and their track records are to the effect that; they have never been associated with any act of criminality and as such cannot be linked to Boko Haram sect.

“Sequel to our letter of July 31, 2013, intimating you about the purported threat to our lives and property, we wish to bring to the attention of your good office the above subject matter for possible investigation and necessary action, should our claims be confirmed to be within the limit of the law”, the petition said.

It was learnt that the petition was also copied to the JTF commander, the state commissioner of police, the director of State Security Services and Gwoza emirate council.

  1. Is CAN implying that being a muslim is a criteria for being a Boko Haram member…did CAN forget about the several christians arrested in various Boko-Haramic attempts?

  2. The arrest is uncalled 4 by the civilian JTF, if there is any allegation on such individuals the military JTF shuld do the arrest and hand them over 4 proper investigation 2avoid religious conflict as there is no law dat warrant the civilian JTF 2detain anybody 4 such a number of days. I’m nt saying they’r innocent bt caution shuld be taken.
