Obasanjo To Commission Sokoto’s N2.6bn Water Treatment Plant

O ObasanjoFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo is to inaugurate the N2.6 billion, 20-million gallons per day Asare Water Treatment Plant constructed by the Sokoto State Government on August 29.

The Commissioner for Water Resources in the state, Dalhatu Tangaza, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Sokoto.

According to Mr. Tangaza, the plant has since been test-run since last April and the test-running is still going on.

“The project has 40 boreholes, two, 1500-KVA generating sets, three staff quarters and a control panel, among others.

“It has since been linked to the three existing water storage tanks at Arkila via a 10-km long pipeline, while each of the tanks has a one million gallons capacity,” he stated.

The commissioner said that some areas of Sokoto metropolis to benefit from the project include Arkilla, Damboa, old airport, Kasarawa, army barracks and Bado, among others.

Mr. Tangaza explained further that the state’s water board would be able to pump over 52 million gallons per day when the new plant was inaugurated.

“This is because it presently uses the three existing treatment plants to produce 32 million daily.

“So, with the 20 million gallons to be produced by the new Asare Water Plant, the combined daily pumping capacity to the over one million water consumer’s in Sokoto State would be over 52 million gallons,” he said.

Mr. Tangaza stated that the State Government had earmarked N75 million for the relocation of water pipes along the 4.5-km Gidan-Man-Ada-Kalambaina-Cement company road, undergoing dualisation.

He appealed to residents in the areas to desist from vandalising water installations, illegal connections and to always pay water bills regularly.
