The Liverpool Echo reports that the £16m offer for Fellaini was “swiftly and angrily’ rejected as the Premier League champions also tried to include Baines in the package for a further £12m.

In a statement released by the Merseyside club, it tagged the bids they received from United for the duo as “derisory and insulting.”

“Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players,” the club’s statement said.

“Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting.”

The bid for the Belgium international midfielder comes a fortnight after his £23.5m buy-out clause expired.

United’s bid, which was reportedly made by chief executive Ed Woodward only 48 hours before the start of the new season, was greeted with surprise at Goodison Park as the players valuation by the Merseyside club is widely considered to be in the excess of the £23.5m release clause which expired July 31.

“The club did not make public this details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in anyway.”

Everton is also disgruntled that United, whose first £12m bid for Baines in June was described as their final, have come back to lure away the defender with another cheap offer.

Moyes, who has turned his interest to Fellaini after failing in his protracted efforts to unsettle Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, bought the Belgian from Standard Liege for an initial £15m- which eventually rose to around £17.5m in additional payment.

Everton have been outraged by United’s bid for the duo but is yet to be seen if Moyes and the club return with an improved offer.
