Declare June 12 As National Youth Day, MKO’s Son Urges FG

Abiola

Mr Abdul Abiola, son of late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 1993 presidential election, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to declare June 12 as Nigerian Youth Day.

Abiola made the call at a rally in Lagos organised by the Nigerian Youth Leadership Group, NYLAG, to mark the World International Day of the Youth.

Speaking after a walk in Ikeja which terminated at the Governor’s Office, Abiola, son of late Mrs. Kudirat Abiola, told newsmen that the youth contributed very much to the electoral success of the late MKO.

“Nigeria needs to recognise its youth and give a special day to celebrate them.

“June 12 cannot be swept under the carpet. The youth who are the future of this nation will be gingered more if such a special day as June 12 is set aside for them,” Abiola said.

Also speaking after the walk, National Coordinator of NYLAG, Mr. Onyekachi Eze, said that June 12 should be declared a youth day to honour those that lost their lives especially the youth.

He added that “the Nigerian government is yet to set aside a date for its own youth. Young people across the country are facing increasingly tough times. Setting aside a day as June 12 for the Nigerian youth will make a tremendous impact and make the young Nigerian more democratised.”
