2015: South East PDP Endorses Jonathan For Second Term At Awka Rally

GEJThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South East Zone, on Friday adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s Presidential candidate in the 2015 presidential elections.

Disclosing this at a PDP rally held at Ekwueme square, Awka, Anambra State, the South East zonal vice chairman of the party, Austin Akobundu, said President Jonathan had done well in office and deserves a second tenure.

“The PDP in the South East zone has declared its full support for Mr. President, Goodluck Jonathan, to contest a second term in office.

“He has done very well, he deserves second term and we the PDP in the South East zone will work very hard to deliver him,” Mr. Akobundu said.

Chris Uba and his elder brother Senator Andy Uba (Anambra South), were notably absent at the rally where the PDP gubernatorial aspirants for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra were presented to party members and supporters.

Also, two other gubernatorial aspirants of the party: Sule Gboma and Mike Okoye, were absent at the PDP rally.

The absence of some aspirants was because of the crack within the PDP fold in the State resulting from the protracted leadership tussle in the state had yet to be resolved.

At the rally, Keneth Emekayi was presented by Mr. Akobundu as the authentic chairman of the party in the state as confirmed by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

However, Erika Oguebego, another factional state chairman of the party, is recognised by the Ubas and the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.

The PDP governorship aspirants who attended the rally were Nicholas Ukachukwu, Josephine Anenih (sole female aspirant), Sylvester Okonkwo, and Obinna Uzoh.

Others were Ugochukwu Okeke, Walter Ubaka Okeke, Tony Nwoye, Senator Emma Anosike, Alex Obiogbolu and Charles Odunukwe.

Addressing the rally, a member of the PDP NWC, Effiong Bassey, said that the party was committed to regaining Anambra State.

He said the NWC had set up four committees, lead by former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, to supervise exercise that would produce credible party candidates for both local government and governorship elections in the State.

In his speech, Mr. Emeakayi pledged that the party leadership in the state was committed to regain the state for the party.

He urged the party’s national leadership to ensure that the candidates of the party for the governorship elections emerged through a transparent primary and not through an imposition.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
