American sprinter Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance and has pulled out of next month’s World championships in Moscow.

Gay, who ran the fastest 100m time of the 2013 athletic season in June, said he was notified by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) on Friday that his ‘A’ sample from an out-of-competition test in May has turned positive.

“I don’t have a sabotage story… I basically put my trust in someone and was let down,” said the 2007 100m world champion.

“I made a mistake. I am pulling out of Monaco (this week Diamond League meeting) and the World Championships.”

His ‘B’ sample will be tested later.

Gay, 30, the second fastest athlete ever (100m PB 9.69secs), ran 9.75secs, matching his wind-assisted semi-final time in Iowa, to win the US Championship trials in June.

Two days later he clocked the fastest 200m time of the year with 19.74secs.

As a participant of the US Anti-Doping Agency’s ‘Project Believe’ program, Gay is regularly tested to make sure his system is clean of performance-enhancing drugs.
