Manchester United have lost out to Bayern Munich in Thiago Alcantra’s chase after the Spaniard agreed to sign a four-year deal with the Champions League winners.

The Spain’s under-21 midfielder will travel to Munich in the coming days to complete the transfer formalities- including medical- of a deal which has been reported to worth £22m.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Thiago Alcantra was a great desire of our new coach Pep Guardiola. We are pleased that we succeeded in this great transfer.

“Thiago has only just been elected the best player of the U-21 European Championship. He is a fantastic player with great perspective which will strengthen Bayern.”

The European champions confirmed on Sunday night that Thiago will be joining the Bavarians after director of sport Matthias Sammer had earlier played down the reports.

A statement on Bayern website read: “The Spanish midfielder will travel in the coming days to Munich to attend the medical examination and signing a four-year contract until June 30, 2017.”

The midfielder, who scored a hat-trick for Spain’s U-21against Italy in the final game of the European championship in Israel, was linked with United before his former manager Guardiola snatched him away, claiming the 21-year-old was his No 1 transfer target.
