Some motorists in Lagos on Wednesday condemned the indiscriminate arrest by traffic officials in the state over alleged possession of fake driver’s license.

Motorists, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, noted that it was surprising that even licenses obtained from the offices of the Federal Road Safety Commission were also tagged “fake.”

A motorist, Mr Paul  Alajemba, said he obtained his driving license in Anambra last year but was booked for possession of  fake driver’s license by the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service officers.

“I was surprised to be fined N20,000 for  a license’ that I got from my state, even when it has not expired.

“I don’t know the features that made them to book the license as fake because an official of FRSC processed it for me,” Alajemba said.

Another motorist, Mrs Gloria Apata, told NAN that her car was impounded for almost two weeks until she got the new temporary driver’s license.

Apata said she did not know that she had a fake driving license until her car was impounded by FRSC officials.

“When I got to the FRSC office, my license was faulted because my details could not be accessed on the commission’s site,” she said.

A senior officer of the VIS, Alausa office, who chose anonymity, said many of the motorists did not know that they were in possession of fake driver’s license.

He added that many motorists got their former license by proxy from either VIS or FRSC officials, and imagined they were original.

He urged intending applicants to desist from patronising touts.
