Nigerian-American former professional basketball player Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon is set to rejoin the Houston Rockets on official basis since he last played for the franchise in 2001.

The Lagos-born athlete, who led Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, will return as a mentor to the team’s interior players- newly signed centre Dwight Howard in question, others: Jeremy Lin and Turkish professional Omer Asik.

The 2-time NBA Finals MVP (1994-1995) does not have a title yet and his position has not been confirmed, but Rocket’s GM Daryl Morey said there is mutual interest to get a deal done to bring one of the most popular player in the team’s history back to Houston officially.

“We are going to bring him in as full-time as possible. It’s not done, but we have mutual interest to get it done, and we’ve had some early discussions.” Morey told the Houston Chronicle.

“We want him to work with Dwight and Omer, and he wants to do that.”

The move has widely been considered as a foundational move as the basketball legend, considered as one of the greatest centres ever to have play the game is expected to help Howard remain focused and engaged.

Olajuwon has been there and has done that. He can identify with what Howard goes through every game, and can help him on both ends of the floor.
