Call For Jonathan’s Impeachment: ACN Plotting To ‘Destabilize’ Nigeria, PDP Warns

ACN-PDP-480x300The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has been accused by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership of plotting to destabilize Nigeria following the opposition party’s heightened calls for the impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The ACN had said following Mr. Jonathan’s failure to uphold the rule of law in the ensuing political stand-off in Rivers State, he should be impeached.

But the ruling party, speaking through its acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tony Caesar Okeke in a statement in Abuja, said such calls show that the opposition party was indeed unserious, lacked direction and only seeks to destabilize the polity.

Reiterating the PDP’s neutral stand in the violence that erupted in the hallowed chambers of the Rivers House of Assembly last Tuesday, Mr. Okeke said the incident was a common feature of parliaments across the world and pondered how the fracas translates into an impeachable offense on the part of the President.

“For the avoidance of doubt, President Goodluck Jonathan has nothing to do with the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly and has no link whatsoever in the recent developments in that legislative house,” the statement said.

The party recalled a similar incidence in the Ogun State House of Assembly earlier this year where the mace was destroyed but nobody called for the impeachment of the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

The PDP further cited brawls in Ukraine parliament in March 2013; Taiwanese parliament in June 2013; Venezuela parliament in May 2013; Turkey Parliament in March 2013; Jordanian parliament in March 2013; the State of Georgia in the United States in February 2013, among others, and noted that nobody called for the impeachment of the Presidents of those countries as a result.

The party however reiterated its call on its members in Rivers State to maintain decorum, remain law-abiding and be calm.
