pdp-logoSo far, about twenty-three aspirants have signified interest to be the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag-bearer in the Anambra State governorship election slated for November 16, 2013, and have purchased the expression of interest forms.

Leading the pack of those who have signified their interest by picking up the forms at N1 million each are Josephine Anenih, former PDP Woman National leader and wife of the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih; chairman of the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and former aide to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Andy Uba and the coordinator of Foreign Affairs at the PDP national secretariat, Agape Kramer.

Others are a former member of the House of Representatives, Nicholas Ukachukwu; a former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and PDP chairman in Anambra, Tony Nwoye; a former Senator, Emmanuel Anosike; and Chairman, Gocuz Group of Companies, Obinna Uzor.

The national leadership of PDP had during a meeting with party stakeholders in Anambra State last week, kick started the process towards the selection of its governorship candidate for the election with the release of the guidelines for the primaries beginning with the sale of expression of interest forms between July 18 and 19.

Sale and return of the duly completed nomination forms was fixed for August 1 to 5, while the primaries and possible run-off was slated for August 24.

The party will submit the name of its eventual candidate to INEC on August 30.

Although the cost of nomination forms has not been made known officially, sources said it may go for N5 million.

At a meeting with the party leadership at its Wadata Plaza national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, all the aspirants were said to have resolved to subject themselves to the often tricky process of party primaries as against picking of a consensus candidate.

They were also reported to have resolved to rally round whoever emerges as the party’s candidate just as they agreed not to dump the PDP for other parties in protest of the outcome of the primaries.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“Once again, congratulations, as I wish you a resounding success in office and every aspect of life.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
