Air Canada Flight 854 Diverted After Man Allegedly Throws Water At Crew, Makes Threats

An Air Canada flight bound for London from Vancouver had to be diverted Monday after a passenger allegedly refused to stop throwing water at the flight crew and other passengers.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae told CBC News the plane was 6 hours into what’s normally an 8 hour, 50 minute flight, when the 51-year-old man took to dumping water on his fellow passengers and the flight crew. He said the man was also acting “strangely” and making threats.

A map shows the Boeing 777 had just passed the coast of Newfoundland on its regularly scheduled flightpath when it took a sharp turn south, beelining for an unscheduled landing in Halifax.

According the Halifax Chronicle Herald, the plane landed at 5 a.m., at which point the passenger was arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The flight, Air Canada 854, spent about an hour in Halifax, then proceeded to its intended destination, Heathrow, where it landed 5 hours after its scheduled arrival.

USA Today reports authorities are weighing whether or not the passenger should face charges.
