Accord Me My Due Respect, Tukur Warns Nyako, Four Other PDP Govs

Published

on

five govsThe national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Bamanga Tukur yesterday warned the five PDP governors from the North calling for his removal from office to act with decorum, humility and respect for his person.

His comment came on the heels of several closed door meetings between governors Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Mu’Azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State and past Nigerian Presidents and military Heads of State.

Alhaji Tukur in a statement by his Special Assistant, Media, Prince Oliver Okpala pointedly told the governors to stop dramatizing the few problems within ‘our democracy’ so as not to send the wrong signals to Nigerians and the international community.

According to the statement, “There is no doubt that the governors’ peripatetic vision has contributed in no small measure to overheating the polity. The National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, has tried all in his powers to bring peace, tranquility and love to the PDP. His three cardinal policies of reconciliation, reformation and rebuilding are aimed at giving all members of the party a sense of belonging.”

While lampooning the governors for not taking advantage of the reconciliation committee entrusted with the task of conflict resolution in the party, Tukur said by their action and utterances, the governors have shown contempt to the committee.

On the purported call by the governors for his removal as a condition for peace in the party during their closed door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan weekend, Tukur admitted that in as much as they have the fundamental right to express their views especially on any issue of national importance, the way they were going about it was flawed.

According to his spokesman, “one would expect them to make comments with decorum, humility and caution. As leaders who the general public looks upon as role models, they are expected to show respect to constituted authority and the elders, which include Dr. Bamanga Tukur, who have contributed immensely to the peace, progress, development and advancement of this country.”

The governors were advised to embrace peace as party faithful and responsible citizens occupying exalted positions so as not to overheat the polity and truncate the country’s nascent democracy.

The PDP national chairman also used the statement to reiterate his commitment to the progress of the party saying that as “a true and committed democratic, patriotic Nigerian, a first-class nationalist and an elder statesman of international repute,” his major aim is to protect democracy, the indivisibility of the country and ensure the progress the PDP.
