Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela has completed his move to Manchester United.

Varela, signed from Penarol, has completed the signing formalities that will have him remain at Old Trafford for the next five years.

The 20-year-old full-back, who was on trial at Old Trafford in the final weeks of last season, had already been made to sign before David Moyes was confirmed as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson last month.

He had done enough to impress coaches in his two-week trial at the club’s base Carrington in May. He will become the eleventh South American to make a first-team appearance for the Red Devils.

Varela is a quick, aggressive right-back who has a real willingness to defend. In that respect, he’s not a typical South American defender in terms of wanting to be a forward player and joining in attacks as a winger.

The defender will be among Uruguay’s U-20 squad for the World Cup in Turkey later this month.

He told www.manutd.com that, “I’m very pleased to be a part of this club, one of the best teams in the world. As everyone in the world knows, this is a huge club that has won everything and I really hope that continues.

“I’m very lucky there are quite a few Spanish-speakers here,” Varela said. “It will certainly help me settle in.”
