Rafael Nadal clinched the 2013 French Open title for a record eighth time after seeing off compatriot David Ferrer in straight sets on Sunday at the Court Philippe Chatrier.

The third seed beat Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to etch his name- as the first ever player to win eight Grand Slam titles events- in the history book, this time on the clay court of the Roland Garros.

Nadal raced to an emotionless victory in two hours and 16 minutes against Ferrer, who has not lost a set since the beginning of this year’s championship.

It was the 24th match between the two Davis Cup colleagues and Ferrer had only won four of it, but a face-off with the modern ‘King of Clay’ in his first major final looked more of a mismatch.

However, Ferrer made a solid start, winning his first service game to love, but was broken in his second and eventually lost the first set 6-3.

Nadal cranked up his game in the second set, holding a crucial fifth game to go 5-1 up.

It wasn’t to be without disruptions as a man holding a flare tried to run into the court but was denied by security.

After the incident, Ferrer looked to mount an immediate comeback but was denied by Nadal as he broke him straight back to love to go two sets up.

Ferrer managed a short stint of a comeback early in the third set as it threatened to rain, but Nadal powered through to finish off the tie and clinch his eighth French Open title to the delight of London Olympic gold medalist Usein Bolt, among the spectators.
