Flooding: Six Communities In Rivers State Submerged After Heavy Downpour

Ameachi1Six communities in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers were submerged in a flood on Thursday after a heavy rainfall, an official told the News Agency of Nigeria.

The communities are Oronija, Ngo, Ajakajak, Iwogoni, Otundong and Oyorokoto, all fishing settlements.

The Media Officer, South-South zone of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ekemini Robert, said in Port Harcourt on Saturday that the flood was as a result of constant rainfall in the state.

Mr. Robert said no life was lost but property, especially homes, schools, hospitals, markets and farmlands were destroyed in the flood. He advised the people to stop blocking water channels to avert flooding. He also advised the people to avoid improper waste disposal in order to reduce the devastating effects of flood.

“I am advising the public, especially those living in the coastal area, to steer clear of buildings close to shorelines due to the upsurge of coastal flooding.

“People should stop building on natural and man-made water channels and avoid wading through flood water,” he said.
