Dismissed Army Officer Docked For Impersonation


A 27-year-old man who had been dismissed from the Nigerian Army was, yesterday, arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja, for unlawful impersonation.

Buhari Mohammed is facing a three-count charge of impersonation and escape from custody before Magistrate Ms. Akinde.

Speaking in court, Police prosecutor Chinalu Uwadione,said the defendant committed the alleged offence on May 27, 2013, at about 5pm at Morikas bus stop in Agege area of Lagos.

Uwadione said Mohammed unlawfully wore Nigerian Army camouflage uniform, claiming to be a member of the Nigerian Army, having been dismissed from the Army,

The prosecutor also alleged that on May 30, 2013, at about 1pm, the defendant, who was at Elere Police station in Agege area of Lagos, escaped from police custody.

Uwadione said the offence committed was contrary to section 79 (1) (6) and 106 (a) and is punishable under section 77 (1) (a) of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011.

However, when the charge against the defendant was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

Mohammed who pleaded not guilty was granted bail by Magistrate Akinde in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum, while the matter was adjourned to July 4, 2013, for trial.
