The inaugural edition of the Cyclefest Race begins on Sunday June 16, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
About 250 cyclists from 16 states of the federation will participate in the first privately organised cycling race in Nigeria.
The Cyclefest Race, which has been sanctioned by the Nigeria Cycling Federation and the Lagos State Cycling Association will involve for major categories, namely: “Men’s professional, Women’s professional, Men’s recreational and Women’s recreational.
Officials from the Nigeria Cycling Federation will be responsible for the officiating and timekeeping as cyclists from the different categories pedal through a total of 270km of roads within Lagos metropolis.
The routes are: National Stadium- Eko Bridge- Marina- Bonny Camp- Ahmadu Bello- Bar Beach- 1004- Falomo- Bourdilon- Foreshore- 3MB- Oworoshoki- Ojota- Otedola gardens- Alausa- Awolowo Way- Allen, Opebi- Sheraton- Bank Anthony- Airport- AgegeMotorWay- Oshodi- Anthony- Maryland- Ikorodu Road- Wester Avenue back to Stadium.
The Technical Director, NCF Bashiru Mohammed revealed that there are lots of prizes to be won as cyclists will have the opportunity of showcasing their talents and skills.
“The federation coach will also use the championship to select male and female cyclists that will represent the country in the 2013 African Cycling Championship in Egypt and the ECOWAS International Cycling Tour from Lagos to Senegal in the months of September and November respectively,” added Mohammed.
The 16 state teams taking part in the race are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, cross River, delta, Edo, Kaduna, Gombe, Nasarawa, Borno, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Rivers and Imo, while the clubs are Lifestyle Cycling Club (Lagos), Road Runners and Recreational Cycling Club (Lagos) and OldBastids (Nigeria).
