Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to the President, Mr Reuben Abati on Wednesday said President Goodluck Jonathan did not flout the laws of the land by declaring a state of emergency in three northern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
Abati, who was speaking in an interview with Channels Television, said President Jonathan acted on the powers conferred on him by the Nigerian constitution by declaring emergency rule, however added that the laws does not empower him to remove democratically elected officials.
Abati was reacting to arguments in certain quarters that the governors of the affected states should have been removed from office for the duration of the emergency rule as witnessed in the past during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Information Nigeria recalls that President Jonathan on Tuesday evening imposed a state of emergency on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states as a measure towards taming the growing tide of insurgency in northern Nigeria.
