The highly controversial hijab debate has been laid to rest by the Lagos State Government which has directed that pupils in its public schools are only allowed to wear conventional uniforms to school.

It added that usage of other appendages, including Hijab – a head scarf for Muslim women, would not be tolerated.

Making Government’s position on the issue known on Tuesday at a press briefing in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Education Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye said that usage of Hijab and other religious materials in public schools negated government’s policy.

“I summoned a stakeholder’s meeting that was chaired by the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Alhaji Oyinlomo Danmole. The Muslim students were represented at the meeting, Lawyers were represented. We discussed the issue at length and we reached certain agreement”, She said.

“We agreed that students could only use their Hijab when they want to go for prayers, when they want to read Qur’an, and when they are going for Jumat prayer on Fridays.

“It was agreed that no student should wear Hijab on her uniform. Doing so will cause confusion and break down of the law.

“Whoever wish that his daughter should be wearing Hijab while going to school and within the school should send such child to a private Muslim school.”

  1. Any body who is not comfortable with the government position should go and stop moving Dangote trailer on the high way for all i care. Must we bring religion in anything in this country. This is not a sharia country and they want to goto school again, they can join their malo sisters in the north to read karatu. that’s all.

Kudos to Lagos state government for standing her ground on this matter. Those that wear the hijab even commit more atrocities than any body.

    • wearing hijab is duty to all Muslims women, and the mode of dressing is public schools in Lagos is Christian oriented. Fashola Almighty Allah is watching you and surely you ‘ll go back to him.

  3. This decision is good. @prince, remember that it is just a school where discipline and orderliness is meant to be imparted into younger ones for their future purposes. It not a religious gathering. It is an arena for training. Don’t you see big official muslim women in big organizations. Like, soldiers, lawyers, bankers and other professionals. They keep to the rules of their organizations. Why don’t you also tell the men to wear cap and agwada all in the name of religious responsibility. Think about it.

  4. Why the muslim of nig. Were always deprive of practices their religion even though every citizen has right to perform any religion of his choice?Hijab is Allah’s command and muslim most abide by it.Fashola Allah is waiting for you.
