I Won Over Chelsea Fans – Rafa Benitez

Rafa Benitez is convinced he managed to win over the majority of Chelsea fans by the end of his controversial spell at the club.

The Spaniard faced consistent criticism from sections of the Stamford Bridge support, who were unhappy the former Liverpool boss was made interim manager at Chelsea.

But Benitez believes he won many Blues fans after taking over from Roberto di Matteo midway through the season, having guided the club to Europa League glory and securing their place in next season’s Champions League with a third-place finish in the Premier League.

“A lot of fans supported me in the end,” Benitez told The Sun.

“Maybe some of them couldn’t change their minds. You can only win trophies at the end of the season. You cannot win them in the first month with a new team.

“You have to be patient but in football that’s more difficult. But we did our job and I hope everyone could enjoy it. We did what we had to do – that’s the main thing.”

Benitez has been widely tipped to take over at Napoli in the wake of Walter Mazzarri’s move to Inter Milan but he confirmed he will take time out with his family before deciding where his future lies.

“I want to be back in work quickly, yes,” he added.

“But I will go back to London and be with my family for a while.”
