Two Men Arrested For Running Illegal Call Centre

Two people have been arrested by Sharjah police for illegally offering long distance telephone calls for as cheap as Dh1 (N43.18)for four minutes.

The arrested men, a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi, were accused of using their accommodation in the Muweilah area as a call centre and offering illegal international telephone calls mostly to Asian countries, a Sharjah police official said.

Police received a tip-off that a group of Asian men were using their accommodation as a call centre and had illegally hacked into telephone systems.

The police official said that the accused had installed banned software that enabled people to make very cheap international calls.

Police raided the premises and confiscated their equipment.

The accused have been referred to public prosecution for further action.

Colonel Jihad Sahoo, Director of Sharjah Criminal Investigation department, has therefore warned owners of internet cafes and the public not to violate the policy of the TRA, stating that the public will be held responsible if they are caught making illegal phone calls.
