English Premier League Awards Goalline Technology Contract to Hawk- Eye.

Many debatable decisions by referees had marred the beauty of the game in the past. One of those decisions comes up when a referee chooses to disallow a goal that one way or the other had inched past the goal line. After series upon series of debates, the EPL has moved to put an end to the contentious goal line decisions.
All 20 top- flight clubs voted to approve the technology at a meeting of Premier League chairman on Thursday.
“The Premier League is pleased to announce that it has awarded Hawk- Eye, the world’s leading provider of vision processing instruments to sport, the contract to provide goalline technology systems across its 20 member clubs and all 380 Barclays League matches,” the league said in a statement.
“These will be the first time that goalline technology is used in any domestic competition.”
The announcement comes a week after world soccer governing body FIFA approved the appointment of German- based Goal Control for the Confederations Cup in Brazil and the World Cup slated to hold June this year and 2014 respectively.
Hawk- Eye is a British based company known for its ball- tracking technology. Its products are widely used in tennis and cricket, and it claims to be ‘millimetre accurate ensuring no broadcast replay could disprove the decision.”
The system to be used in the Premier League will notify the referee if the ball has crossed the line within one second.
Installation of the system is expected to take up to six weeks to complete at the 20 clubs competing in the Premier League next season. The system will involve the use of seven cameras behind the goal.
The recent adoption of goalline technology by FIFA and then the EPL seem not to be the way forward with FIFA’s European cousin UEFA. UEFA favours the use of extra officials behind the goal than adopting technology.
