Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that the proposed plan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to amend its constitution will not succeed.
Atiku made the remarks yesterday while fielding questions from journalists after he paid a courtesy call on Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso at the Government House, Kano.
“The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gives any interested Nigerian the right to contest for any position of his or her choice. It is also unconstitutional as far as the PDP constitution is concerned. Nobody should stop anybody from contesting for an election.
“And I don’t think amendment of the PDP constitution is going to succeed anyway,” he said, and described the move as an infringement of the rights of Nigerians.
Atiku also dismissed a statement alleged to have been made by INEC that election might not hold in the North in 2015.
“The entire North is peaceful except two states. How can you now say there may not be election,” he asked.
On the registration crisis bedevilling the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku absolved the PDP of having a hand in the matter.
He said that based on his independent investigation, PDP was not behind what was happening with the merging parties.
Atiku was in Kano to commiserate with the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, over the attack on his convoy on Jan.19.
