Niger State Governor Charges NYSC DG on Corruption

gov Muazu Babangida AliyuGovernor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has asked the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to investigate cases of corps members, who abandoned their places of primary assignment at the end of the orientation course, only to return on monthly basis to collect their allowances.

Governor Aliyu, who made this known while receiving the NYSC Director-General, Major-General Nnamdi Thomas Okoroafia, who paid him a courtesy call at the Government House in Minna, the state capital on Tuesday, said the incident was common across the country, adding that it was being perpetrated in connivance with some officials of the NYSC at state and national secretariat.

The governor described the act as not only illegal, but breeding corruption, saying that if the corps members were allowed to go unpunished, others would continue in such corrupt act, believing it was the only way to achieve their objectives. He therefore, suggested that those found to have been involved in the illegal act be made to forfeit their allowance, repeat the whole service year, while officials who collaborated with them should also be sanctioned.

He said the Niger State government would continue to give maximum support to the NYSC programme, as the scheme was supporting the state in its educational and medical programmes. He, however, said the permanent NYSC camp at Paiko was already being given a facelift to make the environment conducive for corps members, even as he said the allowance being paid to corps members had been increased by 100 per cent.
