Lack of good governance responsible for kidnapping and terrorism – Ex JTF Commander

riotThe upsurge in terrorism and kidnapping in Nigeria has been said to be as a result of lack of good governance in the country. This assertion was made by a former Commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta, Major General Charles Omoregie (rtd).

Speaking during the weekend in Benin City, while delivering a lecture entitled: “The Security Challenges in Nigeria: Role of Neighborhood Watch,” General Omoregie expressed concern over the prevailing violence in the Northern part of the country and stressed the need for political leaders to be sincere and provide the dividends of democracy to check the ugly trend.

The former JTF Commander, who is now the chairman of the Edo State Neighborhood Watch, advocated the need for government at all levels to encourage the Neighborhood Watch Programme, explaining that “the people committing this havoc are our brothers and we know them. By the time we arrest the situation at the local level, it will not grow.”

Also speaking at the occasion, Deputy Governor of Edo state, Dr Pius Odubu, noted that the establishment of Neighorhood Watch in the state had assisted immensely in the fight against crime in the state.
