About five persons were reported killed on Saturday in Wukari, Taraba, while several others were injured, as faithful of two different religious groups engaged in a violent clash. Hundreds of houses and business premises, including places of worship, were also razed during the violence.

Confirming the incident, Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Amos Olaoye said the police are in control of the situation, and normalcy has returned to the town.

According to him, the crisis which erupted in the early hours of Saturday was ignited by an argument between some youths at a training session on a football pitch, which later turned violent, following the killing of one of the youths in the course of argument.

Sources say the clashes that followed were brutal, and dangerous weapons were used by the youths, while residents were forced to flee their homes.

Olaoye said some of the injured victims were being treated at the General Hospital, Wukari and other health centres in the town.

In view of this, the state’s Acting Governor, Alhaji Garuba Umar, has declared a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the town to prevent the escalation of the crisis. He also urged the people to shun violence and embrace peace, saying that the curfew would be relaxed as soon as normalcy returned.
