Newly formed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum met in Abuja on Monday to commence moves to checkmate the newly formed opposition group under the auspices of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The governors have also resolved to set up a crisis mediation committee led by Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, to attempt to bring together the warring members in the South West zone of the party. This is coming as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has resolved to postpone the election of a new chairman till May.

The Chairman of the newly formed PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, told reporters that the meeting was called to x-ray the state of affairs of the PDP: “We are of the opinion that we should take steps to set up structures to meet the emerging challenge of APC,” he said.

Governor Akpabio also noted that part of the resolution was that PDP should have continuous interaction among its national leadership and the Board of Trustees (BoT) in order to build a synergy with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). His words: “We set up a committee to evaluate the situation in the South West and we will be communicating with the South West leaders and that committee is headed by Governor Ibrahim Shema… Governor Shema and the leaders of that committee would be meeting with the leaders of the southwest and they will come with resolutions that can resolve the issue in the South West.”
