Leaders unable to provide adequate security for the citizenry should be impeached – Governor Amaechi

Gov-Rotimi-Amaechi1Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has pointed out that the “inability of elected leaders to provide adequate security for the citizenry is an impeachable offence”. Amaechi made this known on Sunday in Houston, United States, at a town hall meeting with the indigenes of the state living in the US.

The governor said, “The first offence governors commit is when they are unable to provide adequate security for the people… This is because the first oath taken by elected leaders is to protect life and property. It is the responsibility of the government to provide security for the people.”

Meanwhile, on whether he was interested in contesting the 2015 presidential election, the governor said he was only concerned with governing Rivers State. He said, “If any other person thinks this man has that ambition, it is that person’s business. The constitution of Nigeria stipulates what qualifies anybody to aspire for any public office. So if that is the reason for denying Rivers State any or everything, too bad.

However, the governor blamed poverty and a lack of education for insecurity in some parts of the country. He said, “I hate to see people building high fences in the name of security… It is as a result of this position that the Rivers State Government has achieved remarkable milestones in providing and maintaining law and order by working hard to ensure security for the people… We achieved the modest successes recorded by adopting a zero-tolerance attitude towards social vices right from the grass roots through education and elimination of poverty by empowerment and skills aquisition.’’
