Jonathan Attacks Obasanjo Again, Calls Him Confused And Unstable

President Goodluck Jonathan has again lashed out at ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as a confused man unstable in his views regarding government’s handing of the protracted Boko Haram insurgency.

Mr. Jonathan, who spoke through his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, was reacting to Mr. Obasanjo’s comment in a CNN interview that the president had been deploying excessive force and exploring little or no dialogue in solving the Boko Haram problem.

“To deal with a group like that, you need a carrot and stick. The carrot is finding out how to reach out to them. When you try to reach out to them and they are not amenable to being reached out to, you have to use the stick,” Mr. Obasanjo reportedly said.

An apparently angry Mr. Abati took to Twitter early this morning deploring the former president’s comment and labeling him a confused man whose counsel or view the government does not care about.

In four different tweets this morning, the presidential spokesperson said, “In Nov. 2012 in Warri, fmr Prez. Obasanjo accused federal govt of being soft on Boko Haram. He recommended the Odi solution: genocide.

“In Jan.2013, OBJ tells CNN Govt shd adopt a carrot and stick approach to Boko Haram. Genocide & dialogue? Where exactly does he stand?

“OBJ’s position on Boko Haram= Contradiction and Confusion writ large.

“One report says OBJ is recommending a multifaceted approach to Boko Haram. This govt certainly doesn’t need a lecture on that!

“Jonathan administration has shown creativity & purposefulness in handling the BH challenge. Hence, the progress we witness.”

Mr. Obasanjo first angered Mr. Jonathan after he suggested that the president appeared a weak leader given the way he was handling the security challenges facing the country.

In his comment, the former President reminded the nation of how he directed security agencies to invade Odi, Rivers State, to fish out militants who killed some security men during his tenure.

An angry Mr. Jonathan however hit back at Mr. Obasanjo during his last media chat, saying the Odi invasion Mr. Obasanjo boasted about did not solve the problem but only ended up shedding the blood of the innocent.

Since then, elements loyal to the two men within the party have engaged one another in a war of words, and the national leadership of the party has been desperate for a reconciliation.

But when a peace team, led by party chairman Bamanga Tukur, visited the ex-President in his Ota farm on December 15, Mr. Obasanjo insisted he would continue to comment on national issues whenever necessary not minding whose ox is gored.

  3. Is either Folusho is a bastered or a fool, otherwise if Abati who is running his mouth like a typical Igbo man fan of old would do so for a favour also fueled by sentiments, have u forgotten ur(Yoruba) proverbs that says that “It’s because of what an elder would eat that deprived him of knowledge”? So, Abati is only doing so to secure is meal. But the irony is that, he’s ignorantly short circuiting what seem to be protected by him. Old fool as Abati. Take this message home.

  6. If critical issue erupt like that of boko haram, different measures are needed to be used.Elders are to give advice while youngs are to chose. The statement read by ‘P.spokeman’ was too absurd.
Obj’s advice was not for is own good but the whole nation.
Or must we all die of bomb?
Mr.president’s actions seems too slow on issues.

  7. @maxwel wat has Igbo people got to do with this?our problem as a nation has always been reasoning base on tribal and religious sentiments. Obj tenure was worst than GEJ.most of the prombles confronting GEJ were created by OBJ. Lets remove tribal sentiment when we make our point. Be objective and stop insulting people. GEJ needs our prayers .Thank you.

  8. @maxwel please watch your tongue.what has igbo people got 2 do with this. Please let us be objective in our criticism. Reasoning on tribal and religious sentiments have been one of our greatest challenges as a nation. Most of the problems GEJ is facing now were caused to a large extent by OBJ. This government is still better than that of ObJ. All he needs is our prayers. Thanks

  9. @maxwel,i know beta dan xchange words wif u cos my mama raised me well#fuckin tribalist#…..d americans say dat by d year 2050 nigeria will cease to exist united as it is now, thanks to potheads lyk u it may come true….naijas problem isnt power, bad government, boko haram or no jobs its tribalism and we can neva move forward as long as people like u continue to exist.

  10. i think this man called obasanjo is utterly confused.i also think he is out of job and needs to be busy. His words these days are not consistent.Am getting tired of listening to him.Let them give him sth to chew by finding him one seat outside the country like ambassador to chad.

  11. GEJ should appoint OBJ to negotiate with bokoharam and place him on target, let’s see what OBJ can do. Obasanjo at this age should always potray good image of other government officials and Nigeria like he preached during his tenure. OBJ should scold, advice and caution GEJ in the secret and not crtisising him on local and international media. OBJ a sign of a bad leader and father.

  12. @maxwell, you sure do have a big mouth, if you were better why weren’t you the president or even you own candidate? I would even prefer if Nigeria will be divided as predicted, so that all these crises will end. All these plainty WAHAla no bi because of Niger Delta oil ? When we are divided all man go face him own LAND AND KINGDOM, rule it and we’ll hear about each persons progress and success, instead of fighting over other people wealth. Rubbish!!!!!

  13. Nigerians have one major problem and that is nigerians. We are quick to blame anyone and everyone but ourselves. We remain blind to the achievements of obasanjo and continue to focus on the shortcomings. For me, any president that doesnt take us back but moves us forward no matter how small the steps are has achoeved something in this country. You have forgotten how life was before obasanjo.

Government is from the people. We are not ruled by foreigners but ourselves. You say tribalism is our biggest issue, I beg to differ. Nigerians is our biggest issue.

We have not achieved a utopia. No country has. But, as long as each president coming in does not take us a step back…

It is easy to destroy but hard to rebuild. Nigeria has been through years of internal destruction. It will not be healed over night

  14. As to the division of nigeria as a solution, it makes me laugh. This fantasy of division miraclesly solving the problem is just that, a fantasy. It’s still going to end up being certain amount of people sharing the money not allowing it to filter down to the benefit of the rest of the country. Not getting things done.

How do you want to divide it? Nigeria doesnt just comprise of 3 tribes. When will the division finally stop? When each tribe is its own country.

Put all this energy talking about dividing into finding a real solution for our country.

  15. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should learn from past wisdom, adapting and combining with contemporary experience and future sustainability, to derive the best.

There are relations yet differences between wisdom, knowledge, understanding, contradiction and confusion.

Reuben Abati should help Goodluck Jonathan listen to and apply wisdom especially where he mayn’t know sufficiently enough perhaps due to no fault of his.

  17. its nt that OBJ is a confused or old man, the point is that neither of the two is up right in governing nigeria to the apex of its climax. the two are highly destructive devises in the nigeria’s disunity. at this juncture, i stongly agree with Mr. OBJ and see GEJ as unfocused selfish ruler of the Nigeria’s federation. GEJ must stand truely with his militant supporters to meet up the challenges facing them of miss lesdership. u all better arise coz we’ve arose from our commas and its now high time to protect our country!!!!!!!!!!! OBJ/IBB TO CONTENIOU THEIR CRITICISM AS ITS A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT to NIGERIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no any fascism will be granted a second chance!!!!!!!!!!!!
