An attack by unknown gunmen on the Joint Military Task force, JTF at its Mariri check-point, Kano, was yesterday repelled, leading to the death of two of the attackers, and the capture of five.

Two civilians, a man and woman, also lost their lives in a cross fire during a shootout that lasted one hour.

Confirming the incident, JTF spokesman in Kano, Capt. Ikediche Iweha stated that one AK-47 assault rifle was recovered from the bandits.

The attack on the military check-point located at Mariri, along the ever busy Kano- Wudil federal highways, led to temporary suspension of traffic while the gun duel last.

Unknown gunmen have of late stepped up their attacks on check-points within the city, with attendant loss of life of several policemen and their rifles.

The development led to heightened security in the city, with the saturation of check-points manned by combat ready operatives.

Capt. Iweha further revealed that the strategic highway had been reopened to traffic and called on the general public to go about their legitimate businesses without fear of molestation.

“We have out gunned the militants that attacked our checkpoint located at Mariri a while ago, we killed two and captured five,” he said.

He assured of preparedness of the military to contain challenges posed by the gunmen, adding that “our men are on top of the situation”. [VN]
