17-Year Old Boy Escapes Mob Action Over Alleged N.25m Theft

The craze to resort to self-help by lynching whenever a crime is committed, no matter how small, is beginnning to ssume frightening dimensions as a 17-year-old boy who gave his name as Yahuza Saidu, Tuesday morning, escaped lynching by a mob at Old Kutunku community in Gwagwalada, Abuja, after he was allegedly caught in a spare parts dealer’s shop attempting to steal a bag containing about N250,000.

A witness said after opening the shop, the owner, Obinna Okafor, was chatting with his apprentice outside, when the teenager made his way into the place and took the bag where money is kept but was seen coming out with it. He said when the teenager tried to escape, the shop owner raised an alarm which attracted some passers-by, who immediately apprehended him.

According to the witness, few minutes later, an angry mob gathered with old tyres and pounced on him.

“The boy would have been set ablaze by the mob but for an elderly woman, who told them not to take laws into their hands but hand the suspect over to the police,” he said.

The source said the owner of the shop dashed to the police station to alert the police, while the mob held the suspect down until they arrived and whisked him to the station.

We gathered that money had been missing from the shop in the past.

Efforts to get Gwagwalada Divisional Police Officer, Mohammed Y. Adamu, proved abortive but a police officer in the station confirmed the arrest of the suspect, adding that investigation was on. “After investigation, he will be charged to court for trespassing and attempted theft,” the said officer concluded.

An explosion has reportedly rocked a church belonging to the father of Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The Rivers State Police Command has however announced the arrest of three suspects who allegedly detonated explosives at a Pentecostal church, Christain Universal Church International, located at Mile 3, Diobu area of Port Harcourt.

The act was reportedly carried out on Saturday night and detonated the explosives suspected to be dynamite.

According to reports, a significant part of the church was damaged by the explosion, which created panic in the area.

Kidnappers on Friday abducted the wife of Olugbenga Ale, Chief of Staff to Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

According to reports, she was kidnapped around Owena after the Joseph Ayo Babalola University while on her way back to Ondo from Lagos State.

The police spokesman in the state, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, confirmed the news to Channels Television on Friday.
