Senate Orders FCTA To Halt Planned Demolition Of Residential Estates In Abuja

They Senate, yesterday stopped the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from going ahead with the planned demolition of 37 residential estates in Abuja.

The demolition exercise, which was intensified in the last couple of weeks, had claimed hundreds of residential homes, many of them under construction, at the capital city.

The Senate’s order was handed down through its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Committee chaired by Senator Smart Adeyemi.

Meanwhile, top officials of the FCTA told the committee yesterday that documents submitted by the developers of the demolished estate in Lugbe, Abuja, indicated that they did not comply with the law over acquisition of the land.

Speaking when the developers and officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration appeared before the FCT committee, Adeyemi said with information reaching them through the meeting, further investigations into the matter would have to be carried out.

The committee, however, urged, the Development Control Department of the FCTA to suspend its plans to continue the demolition of 37 estates that were said to have been constructed on illegally acquired plots, pending the outcome of its investigation.
