Jonathan Gives Hope To Nigerians In Diaspora As He Says They May Vote In 2015 Polls

President Goodluck Jonathan Thursday hinted that Nigerians in the Diaspora may participate in the 2015 general election.

Jonathan, who spoke in Niamey, capital city of the Republic of Niger during a meeting with Nigerians residing in that country, said the final decision would be made public next  year.

He also said he foresees a situation whereby  Nigerians in the Diaspora will able to vote in the presidential and gubernatorial elections as a starting point, noting that he has requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to look at the possibilities.

The President who was on a working visit to Niamey where he joined President Issoufou Mohammadou in presiding over a scheduled meeting of the High Authority of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation left for Mali at the close of the Niamey parley.

He said though he was not going to give a 100 per cent response on the Diaspora voting now as efforts are on to towards realising it, he stated that: “I have asked INEC to work towards it by 2015.
“Diaspora voting is realistic even of it will not be possible in all elections at least we will work towards the presidential and governorship elections.

“But for the parliamentary, because of the complications involved, it may be difficult.”
