Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, human rights activist and political maverick should have been a year older had he been alive today. But in his absence, here’s wishing the legend and ‘prophet’, a happy post humous birthday.
Most of the things Fela sang about in his songs are playing out right before us today – one wonders what his response would have been to the fuel subsidy removal, Faroukgate scandal and the boko haram insurgency among other societal ills.
In a related development, Africa’s premier Disc Jockey, Dj Jimmy Jatt is also a year older today. Happy birthday to you!
