Jigawa Emirate Renews Partnership With Police

THE five emirate councils in Jigawa state have vowed to use their platforms to mobilise their people to give maximum support to the Nigerian Police Force in their determination to overcome the current security challenges bedeviling the country.

The five first class emirs made the promise when the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 1, Mr. Philemon Ibrahim Leha visited their palaces to solicit their support on the new police reform aimed at repositioning the police for better service delivery.

The AIG had visited the Emir of Hadejai, Dr Adamu Abubakar Maje, Emir of Dutse, Dr Muhammad Nuhu Sunusi, Emir of Gumel, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, Emir of Ringim, Dr Sayyadi Mahmud Ringim and Emir of Kazaure, Dr Najib Hussaini Adamu.

In his remarks during the visit to his palace, the Emir of Hadejia, Dr Adamu Abubakar Maje said, traditional rulers have a vital role to play in providing security, and maintaining law and order in the society given their closeness to the people and the fact that they still enjoy the confidence of the public.

His Highness Maje noted that, they would continue to give all necessary support to the police and other security agencies for promoting peace, unity and progress in the state and Nigeria at large.

He, however, charged the police to change their harsh approach to the public to a more humane and democratic disposition so as to attract more acceptance and support from the people.

In the same vein, the emir of Dutse, Dr Mumammadu Nuhu Sunusi urged the police institution to review the process of recruitment and posting of its men to conform with the ethics and culture of the society.

He said it is worrisome to post junior officers outside their catchment areas citing cultural conflicts and other hindrances as possible limiting factors in the discharge of their duties.

AIG Leha told the emirs that the Nigerian Police has initiated the reforms to redefine the moral attitude of its men and rebrand their image in the eye of public.

He said the reforms, aimed at fashioning out new approach to maintaining law and order, could not be accomplished without the support from traditional institutions, religious leaders and the general public. The AIG was on a two-day working visit to Jigawa, one of the States in zone 1.
