DANA Crash: US investigators arrive Nigeria

An expert team of accident investigators from the United States National Transportation Safety Board has arrived Nigeria.

This was made known Friday to Journalists by our own Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Capt. Muktar Usman.

The American team will be part of the ongoing investigation of Dana Air’s Boeing MCDonnell Douglass-83 plane crash that led to the death of 153 people on board and six people on ground at Iju-Ishaga in Lagos, last Sunday.

Capt. Usman said the team was being led by Senior Accident Investigator, Mr. Dennis Jones.  Usman said the team of American investigators had joined their Nigerian counterparts to commence the analysis of pieces of evidence obtained from the crash site.

“Accident investigation is a process; it is technical, factual, science-based and it is international in nature. We will go through the process. We have already started, Usman said while speaking to Journalsits at the Murtala Muhammed Airport. Usman stated.

“We have done the on-site accident investigation and gathering of evidence from the crash site. The next stage is the analysis of evidence, and then we will make safety recommendations to prevent future occurrences.”

“In this Dana crash, we have recovered the flight recorders popularly known as black boxes. They have been inside the fire for 24 hours before their discovery at the crash site. We are hoping that it will contain useful information that will make us to arrive at a conclusion, very good safety recommendations to prevent future occurrences.” Usman added.
