THE former Vice Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has asked Nigerians to check corruption and insecurity in the nation.

Also, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin branch has urged a prompt convening of a national conference to discuss the problems of the nation.

While reacting to the bomb blast in Kaduna yesterday, Bakare said unless Nigerians particularly the elite stood up to address the prevalent state of insecurity and monstrous corruption “we may likely kiss Nigeria good-bye on or before 2015.”

He also condemned the ongoing $620, 000 bribery saga between the former chairman, of the fuel subsidy probe panel in the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan and businessman, Mr. Femi Otedola.

He described the bribery allegation as an attempt to frustrate the report and distract attention from the contents of the reports.

Addressing the press in Lagos yesterday, Bakare said: “First and foremost, Nigerians should not get distracted with the bribery issue, although a serious matter and by now the two people involved should be under serious interrogation instead of the claims and counter-claims that the nation is being fed with.

“However, this should not distract us from the real report of the panel, which revealed massive corruption and injustice to the Nigerians masses.”

Bakare said the contents of the report must be followed to logical conclusion and that those found wanting must be punished. He insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan must explain to Nigerians why money was spent on subsidy without proper appropriation.

According to him, “this has again shown that our rulers do not take the welfare of the people seriously. While Nigerians die of poverty, wallow in pains under intense hard economy, they die in road accidents due to bad roads and poor health facilities and others, our leaders go about partying as if nothing is happening.”  He added that: “Nigeria may soon go bankrupt.”

He said the kind of recession coming to Nigeria would not only affect the poor, “the rich will also be affected badly.”

Bakare also condemned the bomb blast in the North but urged the government to take the right step.

Regarding the ongoing merger talks between his party, CPC and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Bakare denied being privy to this development.

The NBA, Ilorin branch said the convening of a national conference remained an inevitable exercise, which if carried out would assist in the maintenance of peace, progress and unity of the country.

In a statement issued after its Biennial Law Week held in Ilorin between June 11th and 13th, 2012 with the theme “Federalism and Quest for National Integration and Development in Nigeria” the Ilorin NBA chairman, Rafiu Balogun and Chairman of the Law Week, Akin Akintoye II, said the national conference, “is a panacea to the growing agitations and increasing outbreak of conflicts in the country.”    .

It said the conference should be held so that “the various constituencies in the country would come together to negotiate the terms of the Nigerian union and deal with all the contentious issues that have bedeviled the country over the years.”

The statement stressed that the concentration of power in the centre should be reduced and redistributed to the states and local council areas to enable the country to have proper Federation.

It said that the country must find an integrative framework to erase artificial territorialism within the country.
