Boko Haram is a Result of Bad Governance, says Amaechi

The Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, has blamed the Boko Haram menace on the inability of the leadership of Nigeria to govern properly. The governor, while urging the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution to concern itself with crucial national issues, said the Boko Haram threat was a consequence of the inability of the Nigerian leadership to offer good governance.

Amaechi lamented that those involved in Boko Haram and other terrorist-related activities were persons mainly between the ages of 18 and 21 years. According to the governor, the ruling class had visited the youth of the nation with political and socio-economic violence by denying them light, schools, water, education, thus egging them on towards their inevitable resort to physical violence.

“If you don’t want them to react with physical violence, then you must provide for them free education, water, roads and light. When you are busy in your school, you will not have time to be actively involved Boko Haram activities.

“Members of the Nigerian elite are yet to rise above board to know that Nigeria is a nation and that what is more important to Nigeria is the interest of Nigeria, not the interest of individuals, who make money to the detriment of Nigeria,” he said.

He traced the existence of insecurity to what he called political and socio-economic violence visited on the people by the elite, adding: “So, if you want to stop insecurity, the first thing to do is to provide for the people’s socio-economic realities: they must have food, water, light, hospitals, etc.

“If you provide these, the next thing to do is ensure that the states are properly policed.”

  1. Methink Gov Amaechi is the least qualified to talk about Good Governance! While he continues to pocket the 11 LGAs and their a/cs thru his Greater PH area empire and the bills to provide himself and all past/future govs and their families, friends with life pensions, allowances the RUMUKHRUSI/TANK to IGRUTTA road, etc is riddled with pot holes and chronic daily go-slow, govt primary and secondary schools are water swamps. Let the LGAs and TOWN councils be allowed to function repairing roads, streets, markets, motor parks, bus stops, health centers, customary courts, primary schools, regulation of business names and premises, clearing street trading, begging, noisy churches and mosques. Boko Haram are not just 18-21yrs old. They are of all ages, gender, religion, political grouping. They exist as sponsors/financiers,planners,foot soldiers, lawyers, legislatures – indeed Presido GEJ said they are everywhere and Nigerians believe him.Boko Haram followers have the following features- excessive GREED for power, money, assets, chronic IMPUNITY to disobey laws, rules, regulation, constitution and incurable INDISCIPLINE in all their ways.
