Why NYSC should remain, by official

AMID calls in some quarters for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Jigawa State Director of the scheme, Mrs. Stella Abba, has indicated that many schools and hospitals will close down if the scheme was disbanded.

Abba, who stated this yesterday at the swearing-in of new corps members, described the scheme as the only agency that has stood the test of time, adding that it was even more relevant in the implementation of government’s programmes.

She added: “We cannot even satisfy the requests for corps members by many establishments like schools. There are some schools that only have a principal as a staff but the other teachers are corps members. So if NYSC is scrapped, such schools will have to close down. So, the NYSC is very relevant in the progress of Nigeria”.

The director, who was reacting to calls for the disbandment of scheme on the excuse that it was no longer relevant, said the proponents of the agitation are ignorant of the essence of the scheme.

“There is no government programme that can be complete without corps members’ input. Corp members are the ones you see in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. No matter how remote a place, you will see corps members and they have been the vanguard through which government programmes are executed”, she stated.

She assured parents of the safety of their wards in Jigawa State as adequate security measures had been taken, adding that Jigawa has been a peaceful state.

  1. The NYSC scheme is good, but if we say that it is relevant because schools and hospitals in the north cannot exist without corpers, we are then saying that both the Federal and State government should are of in terms of manpower development and employment in thise regions. There is definitely an ongoing allocation for sustaining those state utilities. NYSC….is it truly national youth service corps or national youth slavery corps? This question is vital because a corper would leave father and mother to a far, unknown region and at the end of the month, he/she gets N19,800 for a month, out of which is include: accomodation, feeding, payment for the use of public utilities such energy, water, etc. Are we expected as corp members to stil bug our parents for our daily up keep? Nigerians…….are we thinking Nigeria for Nigerians or for the privileged few??

  2. To safeguard against possible loss of life of corp members especially in the north for political, religious, and the ever increasing other reasons. it is better for every Nigerian to serve Nigeria in his geo-political zone but not in his state of origin. this way corp members will not be total strangers of the terrain when emergency arises while serving there nation.

  3. nigeria need a contextual cure for sycophant mode of leadership, if our leader are qualify enough to be in the personage status, then they is a need forcare as for pregmatic zeal of youths as up coming optissium leadesr mostly the corps members’ whom has strive thematical to graduiate from their their verious institue of learning. So the nigera government should esteemly the nysc with personified accrediation expences and it cares of nigeria youth corps.

  4. Severalschools, hospitals and host of other governmental parastatals need corp members to function ok; no wonder there gross unemployment cos Nigerain need cheap labour or poeple they will pay less so that house of Assembly and Senate will be a permament job and an avenue for draining the National purse! It seems those requesting for continuation of NYSC are selfish people. I served my own NYSC @ jigawa during the heir days of Sharia, as a Christian, I was nearly knifed at Ringim and today somebody is still advocating for NYSC cos of some selFish gains. The FG should go to higher institutions and give to every graduating students about N50000.00each to be self employed, the tide of unemployment will change immediately in Nigeria.

  5. NYSC PROGRAMME IS TO SCRAPPED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING REASONS (1) THE AIM OF THIS PROG. IS TO CREATE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN NORTHAN AND SOURTHAN NIGERIA, COZ AT THAT TIME NO COPORATION BETWEEN THEM. WHAT UP NOW? (2) SHOULD BE GIVING GRADUATING STUDENTS HALF OF WAT IS SPENDING OF EVERY CORP MEMBER TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT
