Eyewitness Blame Police For Accident Which Claimed Several Lives

Three people Olubusayo Kalejaiye, Isaac Ejuvwevwo and Saka Lukman, who claimed to have witnessed the ghastly accident that claimed several lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday allege that the accident was caused by the Police. According to them, the police mounted the checkpoint on a dangerous portion of the road this resulted in a traffic jam after which a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery Company collided with other vehicles leading to an inferno.

The police however claim that Dangote truck’s driver was responsible for the accident. Police counsel, Mr. Chukwu Agwu, blamed the accident on poor state of the truck and the driver’s recklessness, he said the truck was not roadworthy and the driver was driving at a very high speed.The CSP Adewale Adebayo, Divisional Police Officer, Isheri Police Division, also corroborated Agwu’s stand.

The Police also claims that the company failed to place any document before the court to back their claim that the Salisu Lawal, the driver of the truck was dead. However, counsel for Dangote Sugar, Mr. Akin Adewopo, maintained that the evidence given by the company’s witnesses, Usman Ahmed and Jibrin Baba, had shown that the driver was dead.

The case which was presented  before Magistrate Elias was adjourned till September 6th.
