The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade, has described the conviction of two drug barons who are Taiwan and China citizens as a victory for Nigeria’s counter-narcotics efforts. They were convicted by Justice Abang Okon of the Federal High Court Ikoyi, Lagos.
It was the first time foreigners would be convicted in West Africa in connection with illicit drug trafficking.
Giade, who expressed satisfaction with the judgment which was given on Friday, vowed to incapacitate more drug barons as the country intensifies the global campaign for a drug-and crime-free society.
Giade said, “The judgment is apt. It is a bold validation of the adequacy and effectiveness of the penal sanctions in the country.
“It will send the warning signal to other drug syndicates, considering the huge amount of the seized drugs.
“This is the first time in West Africa that a Taiwanese and Chinese will be convicted for drug trafficking. We are also pleased with the speedy trial on a daily basis by the judge.”
He further explained that the joy in securing the conviction was based on the fact that whenever the agency successfully apprehends one drug baron, over 100 drug traffickers from the criminal trade would have been indirectly prevented from plying the illicit trade.
The judge sentenced the Taiwanese, Fong Chui Sen and the Chinese, Richard Wang to 30 years’ imprisonment each.
The convicts got 15 years on count one; and another 15 years on count two over conspiracy and unlawful importation of 450kg and 400kg of cocaine respectively into the country.
In the two-hour judgment, Abang noted that the quantity of the drugs showed that the convicts had no sympathy for the country.
