Police avert bomb explosion

The Police on Monday in Ogun, averted a major disaster by detecting an explosive object planted at the state House of Assembly. The incident happened at the inauguration of the seventh state House of Assembly which had the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, the newly-inaugurated Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi and other lawmakers present at the Assembly.

Hundreds of people and guests of the new lawmakers were also at the Assembly to witness the inauguration. The explosive was detected on the grass near a window of the recording section of the Assembly by one of the policemen.

Mr Amosun, in a reaction to the incident, condemned the act, saying it depicted “the height of desperation and wickedness by some agents of violence still prowling the state”. The governor, who spoke through his senior special assistant on Media and Communications, Funmi Wakama, said his administration would not allow agents of violence to ply their trade in the state.

“The governor has directed relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and unmask those behind it and bring them to book,” Mrs Wakama said.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO)of the state Police Command, confirmed the incident, saying the object was an “Improvised Explosive Device” (IED).

Mr Adejobi said the State Commissioner of Police, Musa Daura, had directed that proper investigations should be made to determine the perpetrators and their motive.
