Lawmakers order stoppage of post-UME

The House of Representatives has mandated the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission, to promptly discontinue the post-University Matriculation Examination conducted annually in Nigerian universities.

In a sweeping decision yesterday, lawmakers voted to support a resolution put forward by a member, Samson Positive, who argued that tertiary schools have abused the post- screening tests, applying it rather as a fund raiser.

“The problems of prospective candidates for university admissions have been further compounded with the introduction of this test and rather than good, our educational system has been worsened by it,” said Mr. Positive, who represents Kogi state.

The lawmakers also faulted the incoherent organization of the examinations which have had candidates placed for tests the same day at separate schools they listed as first and second choices during application.

The decision had been expected after the House Rules Committee, listed the matter for discussion earlier the week but failed short of adopting a position after repeated rescheduling.

In the days building up to Thursday sitting, many lawmakers have spoken in similar vein against the admission test which has run in the institutions for more than five years.

Cash cow

They argued yesterday that institutions in the country have converted the test, earlier introduced as a supplement to the conventional UME, to a quick source of raising funds from students and parents alike.

“This has become a very worrisome issue today- serving as an avenue for extortion and exploitation,” said three-term member Farouk Lawan, who heads the House committee on Education.

After its introduction in 2006, subscriptions for the test in universities and polytechnics across the country have been independently decided by different institutions with some charging prospective students as much as N10, 000 for the one-day aptitude.

The charges continued after the NUC directed in 2009 that such payments not exceed N1000, if they should be made.

The decision, the representatives said is to be enforced immediately, and have mandated the House Legislative Compliance Committee to ensure the education ministry and the NUC, carry out the directives without delay.

  1. Dis is a wonderful idea & wish d universities wil adhere 2 dis. They should giv d students direct entry 2 dere various schools of choice according 2 dere scores. I thank d lawmakers 4 lookin in2 dis matter cos dis denied me admission 4 3 gud years! Thank u Sirs 4 dis idea cos dis shows dat u’re concerned abt d leaders of tomorrow.

  2. unilag pls, respect the decision of the house of rep.Once you hold your postume, other universities will follow suit, pls dont cause problems, I totally suport the idea of no postume, cos they`ve turned it into a money making venture.

  3. in as much as post ume denied me adm. once nd d money involvd, i stil prefer it cos d level of malpractices n jamb is greatr dan dat of p/ume so it realy showz who deservs d admssn. think abt it!

  4. over d years post ume az helped to curb some of d excesses of jamb! no doubt it az also in recent times metamorphosed into a money making venture by our universities. But cancelling it won’t help! Cos dat way uni will now admit based on how high ur utme score is! Rem say pple stil dey use g.S.m 4 hall!

  5. the post ume is just a medium schools use in extorting money from students, regardless of their background. Not minding if the guardian of the student could afford it. The decision taken by ”The house of Reps” is one the Nigerian child would never seize to appreciate..GOD BLESS NIGERIA…

  6. Why is everybody talkin about money here? No troubles, i agrees to d fact that it had turned 2 a money makin venture, but, i urge the House to think twice. Jamb is also extorting money from candidate: the same one day exam, their collected #5000. Post utme sure helps to checkin jamb’s excesses; for cryin out loud, their are student who made 301 n above in their jamb score dat r ignoramus; (i mean 100% olodo in their various subject). I suggest, instead of cancellin post utme entirely, their should fixe a definite price at which student should buy post utme form: if it should be bought with money. Thanks.

  7. God bless nigeria and D law makers. if any umiv. disobey d law makers dat means dis country could be lawless remba wot d bble says in d buk of Rom.13:7-8. Disobedience is like a sin of witchcraft. we’nd God 2 inervain in our country. OBEY D WORD OFGOD. cming of christ is imminent.God give us d grace 2 obey. God bless nig. as we obey Amen.

  8. Cancelln p-utme is a bad idea. so many av cheated in dis utme n made it up to 300 n abv whereas dose who read earnestly has notn 2 shw forth. I thnk putme shld be brut bak lets knw ur strngth, ability n intellectual knwldg. Pls house cancelln putme is nt d best now but it shld sold at affordable prices. Cheatn durn putme is nt dat easy cmpr 2 jamb. Pls Nigerians lts pt an end 2 examtn malpractices. U can imagine wat d future of dis grt country wuld be if we cont 2 cheat, manipulate tns.

  10. Obj is a crazy old chipmunk.who think there is no future in this country.did he read up to master level not to talk of phD.no post utme this year, thanks to house of rep. for this gesture,we appreciate it.GOD bless nija.

  11. In as much as post ume is used a money making source by schools, i still prefare it to utme due to the level of malpractise which is by far greater than that of post ume, and with this new policy the level of utme malpractise is bound to increase.I think government shuld look more into examination malpractise, and the granting of admission shuld be thoroughly supervised.

  12. It’s a very welcome Idea if the Post UME issue has been dissolve by the law makers.
As a matter, the post UME stuff is now a means where the various institution raises fund in order to satisfy there selfish desires.
Of a true saying, how would this be interpreted, that a student who obtain about 69 percent of his/her post UME result is not given admission.
Thanks to the National house of representatives and I hope this Idea will stand the test of time.
Morealso,I will be glad if given hint on the cut off marks of the University of Abuja on Accounting courses.

  14. Debreg what is ur promble about 300above, say smtin good d idea is good if u dont like it go to eer. Do u what pstume as done to 228 in jmb 47 in pst 251 again 50.1 no admition and u sayed wil are happy with d idea why wouth we.

  15. Dats nice my people i love that idea by stopping Post ume in our country. It will even reduce most of stark illitrates in Nigeria if people are able to get Admmission easily without no stress coz it is even risking for someone to travel far distance to each universities for post ume. Despite apart from the JAMB fee u’ve the universities will now collect a huge amount of 10, 000 and 500 for conducting the post ume test whish is not suppose to be dat. I will plead to the House Of Rep. to simply cancel the Post UME in this country just to allow most people to be educated in our country.

  16. Is the University Commission going to accept to stop Post UTME exams? What are the sanction on the University that refuse to stop post UTME? Who is going to issue admission letter to the candidates who has got the required point? Indeed, what the Honourable members said regard to the post UTME is true, what is expected of them[Honourable Members] now is to compel the University through Minister of Education to issue the Admission letter without delay. Please Honourable Members you should not allow this your good Bill to die like that. Long Live our Honourable Members, Long Live Nigeria.

  17. In oda Country, notin like UME or P/UME all they need to get admission is SSCE exam, I don’t know y Our own (Nigeria) will be diffrents. At least we are still triying our best to write jamb wat is the meaning of post Jamb again. They r just using only admission process to make money which is not ok.

  18. U all say post utme shld b cancelled, bt reason enof, wt wil b d yardstick 2 measure d competence and qualificatn of d studnts enterin d university? It will only increase corruptn & make d isue of admissn get worsend cos anyau students with scores dey did nt burn d candle 2 get, with results dat are fake will b d students in school. Why dnt u guys study hard and reap d fruit of ur labour 4 d exam. With prayer all is well. Let postjamb contine

  19. D idea of post ume is not a gud idea like unad dey just used p/ume 2 b chopin money, first time i did their p/jam deydid not record my english&second time i did their p/ume again dey did not record math.D idea of p/jam is not &is corruption pls let us hold p/jam is not agenic. For more equire pls visit me at my email [email protected] call me on dis no.08035510227

  20. Really,i think the post ume should’nt be cancelled. As you all know dat most canditates(jamb) do escape the exam either through one malpractice or the other. If these unqualified canditates are now pushed into d university, they may end up …. Since they have the idea of malpractice now, who knows what they will do when they get into the university. So the post ume should continue.

  21. I hereby apply and be well about jamb cutoff mark for this year 2010
some say is 180 for university but i don’t know and am not sure pls who can help me out?
what is the cutoff mark for this year jamb and which day is post utme be started?
pls send details to my mail box.
    [email protected],[email protected]
pls this year jamb is some how bad because no information from jamb board is a poor method from other country
    nigeria be wise for once.

  22. Post utme or not i tnk d lawmakers n NUC shld stick 2 a point.wel am nt against p utme i dnt knw why others wnt it cancelled, let’s knw if u really study 2 pass jamb. Luk its a fallacy dat any university wil demand 10,000 4 post ume.i tnk dey shld sum up proper a strategy dat wil yield gud result.

  23. Gudday to d house of rep.if is truely that when a std pass d post utme examination, the admission letter will b giving to such std.pls i will apeal that u shld let d exam to continue.by doiny that,i think admission will be giving to d right student and it will encourage reading to every std.

  24. Well, people are saying that different malpractises are done while writing jamb.but i think dat post ume of a thing be put to a stop cos it is still d same students who reached the jamb cutoff with their malpractises sit for it and are admitted and the good ones are not admitted maybe they could’nt meet up with the demand financially or they don’t know any prof or lecturer to help them.we should pursue 1GOAL and that is EDUCATION FOR ALL and Nigeria can only achieve dat by making things easier for the poor.

  25. is a very gud idea stopping de putme, hp it’ll wrk coz dis putme of a thing has pissed of life out evry student of dis country.u find out dat so many peple after writing putme dey wil still not gain de admission due to lack of finances but sm who can acquire it u found out dey don’t even sit 4 de exam.all dey need do is contact whoever will run it 4 dem but during de former days when jamb gives admission things weren’t like dis at least we have standard graduates who can defend deir result anytime call to. but now putme spoilt everything becos all dey need is money. if we can stp dis and sit 4 jamb alone but standardly after all most country do it wit ssce alone y must our own alwaz be differ.. and education is 4 all not 4 de rich alone pls NUC do smthing strictly about this so dat some of us i’ll ve de urge 2 further our education.
